Electric Vehicles On The Rise In Singapore

In September, electric vehicles (EVs) in Singapore made up nearly one-fifth of all new car registrations - which was almost triple the rate seen just last year. This growth indicates that EVs are becoming more popular than ever before.

To support the increase in demand for EVs, the Government has awarded a tender for 12,000 EV charging points to be deployed in nearly 2,000 housing board carparks.

Out of the 11 companies that bid for the 10-year contract, 5 were selected to deploy the electric vehicle chargers. The chosen firms are Charge+, ComfortDelGro Engineering, SP Mobility, Shell Eastern Petroleum and Strides Automotive Services (a subsidiary of public transport operator SMRT).

The Minister of Transport, S. Iswaran, noted that the expanding network will greatly reduce the concerns that electric vehicle drivers have about whether their cars will run out of power before they reach a charging station.

This large-scale tender for car charging points comes after an earlier one in September 2021 for the installation of more than 600 charging points. So far, 60 percent of the planned sites have begun operation, Mr. Iswaran said in a speech given at Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre for the Singapore International Transport Congress and Exhibition.

Mr Iswaran explained that electrification will play a significant role in reducing land transport emissions, which make up 15 percent of Singapore’s domestic emissions. The country’s goal is to have all vehicles running on clean energy by 2040.
