What Happens If Your Electric Vehicle Runs Out Of Battery On The Road?

Very soon electric vehicle (EV) drivers will be able to charge their vehicles more conveniently, with a new generation of mobile charging vans set to hit the roads.

If you need a charge you can simply call a mobile charging company, and a van equipped with portable chargers will go to you to help charge your EV.

The services are for drivers whose cars have run out of battery while driving, as well as those who don't have EV chargers in their carparks yet. These services are in line with the Singapore Green Plan, which is the country's sustainability push to achieve specific goals by 2030.

Wearnes, a car dealer, is one of the service providers and recently started a pilot for its services. The general manager, Vynn Tu, explained: "As and when their battery runs flat, we'll respond to them by coming down with our mobile EV charger."

The company will send an electric Kangoo van that has been retrofitted with a Durapower battery. This device only needs ten minutes to charge, and once it is charged, can last up to 30km.

The services provided in the pilot only operate during weekdays, from 9 a.m to 6 p.m., but the company plans to eventually expand its offerings. They also plan to provide charges that can last longer than their current ones.

Another company looking to meet the rising demand for electric vehicles is EVCo. The company will lease 550 electric commercial vans to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) next year. In addition, those who rent one of these vans will also have access to more than 20 mobile charging vans.

Fuji Foo, managing director of EVCo, said that his firm will provide charging services knowing that drivers may have trouble finding one on their own.

Mr. Foo said that the vans will be available for lease on a quarterly or yearly basis and fuel savings could make leasing an electric van cheaper than using a traditional one.
